UAV Surveying
If you have seen or read the news over the last few months you will know that drones, otherwise known as UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), have been gaining a bad reputation.
As a result of the chaos caused, the no fly zone surrounding UK airports will increase from 1k (0.6 miles) to 5K (3 miles) on 13 th March, and violating these rules could lead to a prison sentence of up to five years.
The construction world, however, is beginning to embrace this technology. In the hands of a skilled and experienced operator, drone technology can be deployed quickly, safely and cost-effectively on any project to capture survey grade information and skilled surveyors operating UAVs who need to fly in a restricted zone will be able to apply for a permit to do so.
Drones are a great example of a technology that is becoming easier to access and can cut time and resources as well as working at height. As well as being able to provide aerial surveys of buildings and up close condition inspections using photographic and video evidence, the process of photogrammetry can be used to create 3D modelling from the data collected from a series of overlapping images. The use of photogrammetry will eventually transform 3D modelling through deeper data insights, cost reductions and reduction of risk.
In the right circumstance, this technology is much safer than climbing ladders and scaffolding and can be done in considerably less time however strict safety procedures need to be adhered to, as well as compliance with both aviation law and health and safety.
In light of this, Avalon Surveyors are excited to be preparing for offering UAV Surveying to compliment the services we already offer. Benjamin has already completed his CAA drone training with Coptrz and is well on his way to obtaining his Pf CO drone qualification (Permission for Commercial Operations). We will keep you updated!
