Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy

Avalon Surveyors Ltd is committed to protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of the people who work for us, and of clients, occupiers, contractors and others who may be affected by our work. This policy sets out how we do that, in line with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the regulations made under it.

Scope

The policy covers all of our work: in the office, when travelling, and on site, including inspections and surveys of occupied and vacant buildings, roofs and other areas of restricted access, and visits to construction sites and works in progress.

Our commitments

  • Assess the risks of our work and put sensible precautions in place, as the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require.
  • Provide the information, instruction, supervision and equipment, including personal protective equipment, that our people need to work safely.
  • Follow the rules, inductions and permits of the sites we visit.
  • Consult the people who work for us on matters that affect their health and safety.
  • Record accidents and incidents, and report them under RIDDOR where that applies.
  • Maintain suitable first aid and fire safety arrangements in our own workplace.
  • Where we are appointed in a role under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, carry out the duties of that role.

How we put this into practice

Before a site visit we consider the known hazards, such as access at height, fragile roofs, confined spaces, asbestos, and the condition and occupation of the building. This policy requires that:

  • no one enters an area or uses access equipment that cannot be used safely;
  • anyone working alone tells a colleague where they are going and when they expect to finish;
  • we check for available asbestos information before any inspection that could disturb building fabric;
  • we drive safely and legally between sites; and
  • office workstations, including display screen equipment, are set up properly.

Wellbeing

We aim to keep workloads manageable and to offer flexibility where the work allows. Anyone can raise a concern about stress, workload or their wellbeing with the Director, in confidence, and we will look for practical ways to help.

Responsibilities

The Director has overall responsibility for health and safety in the practice. Everyone who works for or on behalf of the practice must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others, follow this policy and the safe working arrangements for each task, and report hazards, accidents and near misses.

Monitoring and review

We review this policy every year, after any significant incident, and whenever our work or the law changes.
