Modern Slavery Statement

This statement sets out the steps Avalon Surveyors Ltd takes to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking in our business and in our supply chain.

Status of this statement

Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires commercial organisations with an annual turnover of £36 million or more to publish a slavery and human trafficking statement. Avalon Surveyors Ltd is below that threshold, so this statement is voluntary. We publish it because we support the aims of the Act, and because the RICS Rules of Conduct expect regulated firms to check that their supply chains are free from modern slavery and other abusive labour practices.

Our business and supply chain

We are a small practice of chartered building surveyors based in Braintree, Essex, serving clients in London, the South East and the East of England. Our services are delivered by our own surveyors, supported where needed by specialist subconsultants. Our direct suppliers are mainly subconsultants and providers of office, IT, software and travel services. We also administer building contracts for clients. Those contractors are appointed by our clients, but our advice can influence the standards they are expected to meet.

Our policies

This statement is supported by our Equal Opportunities Policy, Anti-Bribery Policy, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy and Corporate Social Responsibility Policy. We pay everyone who works for us at least the legal minimum wage, and we do not tolerate forced, bonded or child labour.

Risk and due diligence

We consider the risk of modern slavery in our own operations to be low, because our services are professional services delivered by qualified people. The greater risk in our sector lies in construction supply chains, particularly labour and materials on building projects. When we advise clients on the selection of contractors, we take account of how contractors manage their own workforce and subcontractors, and we raise any concern about labour practices with the client.

Awareness

We make this statement known to everyone who works for us, and we ask them to stay alert to the signs of exploitation on the sites they visit.

Reporting concerns

Anyone who suspects modern slavery or exploitation connected with our work should tell the Director straight away. Concerns can also be reported to the police or to the Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline on 08000 121 700. In an emergency, call 999.

Monitoring and review

We review this statement every year, and sooner if our business or supply chain changes significantly.
